Painting
Techniques:
The
success of your paint job depends on your application method and the product
you use. I recommend Sherwin Williams Gallery paints for a quality 1K finish.
(A 2K finish is not suitable for on-site use due to its toxicity and safety
risks.) Use a good-quality HVLP sprayer, such as the 3M Performance Spray Gun.
Avoid using brushes or rollers on cabinet doors, as they typically don't
provide a professional look.
- Apply two coats of latex
primer. (Skip this step if you ordered the doors with primer already
applied.)
- Sand with 220-grit
paper, using an orbital sander for the faces of the frame and panel. Be
careful not to damage the inside edge details—hand sand these lightly.
- Apply the first light
coat of Gallery paint, let it dry, then sand again with 320-grit paper.
- Apply the second and
final coat. Keep the door flat, away from dust, and at room temperature.
Avoid overheating the finish to prevent an orange peel texture. If you
notice any texture issues, sand with 320-grit, spray again, and let dry at
a lower temperature.
This
process results in a professional-grade finish. While additional coats can be
applied, each layer increases the risk of the finish cracking. Primer is key
here, serving as the "high build" layer that allows the final topcoat
to be smooth. The paint provides the visible finish, but the primer does most
of the heavy lifting in achieving a high-end result.
